Introduction
IPB is great software but its search engine optimisation needs work. As a webmaster who uses this forum software, I have spent a lot of time developing techniques and configuring my server to make my IPB installation as search engine friendly as possible and I now document those efforts here for your benefit.
Ideally, these steps should be taken when your site is new. Adding these optimisations to an established website will not have immediate effects and may actually have a detrimental effect on your search engine traffic for quite some time. Search angines are fickle beasts and optimising is no guarantee your traffic will improve. It could take many months, even years for your optimising to bear fruit, it's important to make that clear from the start. However, we feel that in the long term, these optimisation tips can only be good for our website and compliance is simply good housekeeping for the professional webmaster. You will have to decide for yourselves if they are appropriate for your own website.
